Discovery Docents take either an animal biofact cart or hands-on kit out onto Zoo grounds, sharing information and animal biofacts (such as teeth or fur) with the public. Volunteers can do this for an hour or an afternoon any day of the week. Interactive kits include one that helps you demonstrate what it is like to walk like a rhino and another that illustrates what it would be like to do various tasks without the use of your thumbs.
Volunteers must be 13 or older or work with an adult. Training sessions begin each year in the spring.
Animal Ambassadors are committed to educating school children and the general public about our natural world and the need for conservation. They serve many functions within the department, most notably handling Education Animals and teaching guests in presentations.
It is absolutely critical that Animal Ambassadors be capable of working in a manner that ensures animal welfare as well as the safety of all involved-the animals, the public, and you. Presentations are done on-grounds or out in the community through our "Zoo to You" program. Volunteers must be 18 years or older, be available one morning each week particularly during the April - June field trip season, be able to demonstrate proper animal handling techniques, multitasking abilities, and interpersonal skills, be willing to work with reptiles and insects, and be willing to make a multi-year commitment.
Zoo School classes run Monday-Friday during summer school break. There are two sessions per day: 10-11:30am and 1-2:30pm. Each class is three consecutive days (Mon.-Wed. or Wed.-Fri.). It would be most helpful if a Zoo School Helper can help for an entire class (three days), or a set day of the week.
Zoo School Helpers assist the Zoo School Teachers in a number of ways. They help set up and clean up after the classroom and craft area for each class, greet the class and help hand out name tags and return children to their parents at the end of class, assist with crafts, and help keep the class together while traveling around zoo grounds (Zoo School Helpers get to join the class for behind-the-scenes encounters).
