Sessions begin in January to prepare volunteers for the start of our busy season, which starts in Spring.
Face of the Zoo volunteers greet zoo guests from March through November. We're looking for volunteers who love the zoo, enjoy talking with people, and like to be outside. Volunteers answer questions, provide directions, respond to guest concerns, and invite Zoo visitors to support the Zoo through on-grounds purchases, donation or membership.
Children are encouraged to volunteer if accompanied by an adult. Service groups and other clubs/organizations or companies are also welcome to "adopt" a shift and share responsibility for staffing an information booth during the same time each week.
Did you know that Zoo volunteers drive the Zoo train and operate the Zoo carousel? Train and carousel ride sales directly support the operations of the Henry Vilas Zoo, thanks to our volunteers.
Volunteers work either from 9:30am to 1:15pm or 12:45pm to 4:30pm. Shifts are available weekdays or weekends between March and November.
Looking for a ROOOOOOOARING good time? Dress up as Henry the Lion! Henry volunteers provide an entertaining Zoo experience for visitors. Mascots need helpers - your helper will be your voice and eyes and will also take lots of photos of Henry with fans of all ages. Regular on-grounds shifts are available 10-12 and 1-3 daily, as long as the weather cooperates.
Henry also makes appearances out in the community to represent the Zoo and to appear at private events for a nominal fee that supports Henry Vilas Zoo.
Volunteers provide a warm, friendly greeting for goat yard guests; provide change for guests to use in goat feed dispensers, and oversee safety of goat feeding area.
Greeters are the first volunteers that our guests encounter. Volunteers in this seated position provide an enthusiastic welcome to guests and thank guests who make a contribution in our new donation boxes. Volunteers may also provide general information and assistance to guests as needed, but may refer more complicated questions to other volunteers or employees as needed.
