The Henry Vilas Zoo in Madison, WI is one of only a handful of admission-free, community-supported zoos in the country. Fully accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, our beautiful zoo provides a safe green place for the whole family to enjoy. All are welcome at the Henry Vilas Zoo!

The zoo does more than just house and feed animals. The Henry Vilas Zoo is a leader not just in quality animal care, but also in sustainability and conservation education.

Conservation - Doing Our Part

The Henry Vilas Zoo participates in a variety of programs that help to conserve habitats and animals as well as save endangered animals.  For more information about the Henry Vilas Zoo's conservation activities, you can read about our work as members of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, our participation in Species Survival Plans, our frequent Conservation Education Celebration Events, what we do with Conservation Practices on Zoo Grounds such as limiting our use of resources, recycling, alternative energy use, water conservation, and the Green Building Features of our newer buildings.

Education - Inspiring the Next Generation

We hope that while you're enjoying your visit to the zoo, you're also learning a thing or two about the animals we care for and their counterparts in the wild.  The Henry Vilas Zoo has a variety of education programs you can explore.  From summer Zoo School classes to Bleacher Programs (Educational presentations at the zoo featuring live animals) there are many ways to learn!  The Zoo is also an admission-free destination for thousands of people from school and community groups each year.  You can also check out our Activities and Games to help you enjoy learning while you play.
